Jae Lee was born in Seoul, Korea and has lived and worked in Toronto since 2001. She received a BFA and MFA from Hongik University in Seoul, Korea, 1980-1989. Lee also earned a BFA from OCAD University in 2007. Since then, she has been working at Open Studio as a lithographer.  She has also been running her own art studio since 1984.  Lee has had four solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group shows in Seoul and Toronto, including, What Lies Beneath and O.W.N. (Object Work Notation) at Open Studio, and The Print Show at John B Aird Gallery.

Lee says her works tell stories of trivial, mundane, or disappearing things that she has encountered in her life. Dried garden plants with their twisted, faded and curvy forms have inspired Lee. Even though they are not flashy or profound impressions, they contain unique histories.  These plants remind her of the time she saw a picture of a mummy in a magazine with its badly decomposed body. Initially, the image made her cringe and feel uncomfortable but the more she stared at it, the more it occurred to her that one day she too will look like this mummy. Everything in the world shares the same cycle. Through multi-colour stone lithography, Lee creates work that beautifies the inevitable.
