Mary Baranowski-Lowden has worked primarily in etching for over twenty years. Born in Montreal, QC, Mary received her BFA (with distinction) and Specialist Diploma in Art Education from Concordia University and studied printmaking at the University of Calgary. Mary was awarded an Alberta Foundation of the Arts Award for career development and has done two artist’s residencies at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy. Mary has been actively involved in printmaking organizations in Canada such as Open Studio (Toronto), Alberta Printmakers’ Society, and the Ottawa/Gatineau Printmakers Connective. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently in Toronto, Portugal, the UK, Taiwan and Cuba.

Many of Baranowski-Lowden’s etchings are influenced by travels—different people, places and cultures have expanded her artistic vocabulary and informed choices of composition, technique and printing when they interplay with elements of nature, textiles and decorative arts. By exploiting the unique qualities of etching on copper to further develop the image, she brings concept and process into balance. Her recent work is focused on nature. Moving from an ultra-urban setting to a pastoral river’s edge in Wakefield, QC, this transition led her to study elements of nature in her new environment, piecing together her observations.
