Tobias Williams’ work is conceptually concerned with examining the historical and contemporary relationship between technology and creativity. In his project Yellow Pages Catacomb Williams created a column of paper skulls fashioned out of sheets from the most recent edition of the Yellow Pages phone directory. This installation, which references the burial catacombs located under Paris, creates a quiet contemplative space to examine the volatile cycle of newness and obsolescence inherent in technological advance. The piece consists of more than 400 paper skulls which were hand fashioned by the artist using a papier-mâché molding technique. Yellow Pages Catacomb has been exhibited two times, once in 2012 at York University and in 2013 at Xpace in Toronto. Tobias Williams is an artist and educator based in Toronto. He has a BFA in Printmaking from OCAD University and an MFA in Studio Art from York University. He was the recipient of the 2009 Don Phillips Scholarship at Open Studio and he was recently awarded with an Emerging Artist grant from the Ontario Arts Council. Tobias currently works in several different media including print, 3d digital modelling, sculpture and installation.
