Sirkku Ketola’s A Body Called Paula: Printmaking Embodied in Performance.

Sirkku Ketola will meet with the audience to gather feedback for the next iteration of A Body Called Paula
 during an Artist/Audience Conversation Drop-in: Wednesday, March 1, 4:00 – 5:00pm

Part installation, part performance, this work evolves with each new appearance. In A Body Called Paula, Ketola’s printed ribbons meander and droop, physically marking out space and time. They are not just objects to view, but are also records of process and motion.

Whether in studio or in performance—a distinction not always apparent—A Body Called Paula is made over time in the gallery space. The art evolves and grows throughout the duration of its exhibition and includes multiple performance printing sessions.

A Body Called Paula marks the beginning of a new long-term, multi-city project for Ketola. Each exhibition of the project responds to its previous site of creation, with stops currently scheduled in Toronto—here at Open Studio, Turku and New York.

Ketola creates each work with a process of wandering, photographing and printing. New ribbons are created using imagerygathered from the previous locale, tracking the artist’s journey and tying one performance to the next. Each component exists on its own, gathering further history and context with each addition. Once complete, the full project will culminate in a museum exhibition of all the ribbons.

Viewers walk away having read a story without words.

Sirkku Ketola works and lives in Finland with regular stints in Belgium. Her mind is fed by the paradoxical contrast of the silence in the north and the bustle in urban spaces. Her exhibitions have passed through international borders in a variety of galleries and museums. Renowned as a screenprinter, she is often solicited to teach and lecture in art academies. A self-described “civilized savage”, she speaks although the quiet allures her. You can view more of her work at http://sirkkuketola.com.

Closing Reception and Performance: Saturday, March 18, 2:00 – 4:00pm

The artist will perform in Open Studio’s Gilmour Gallery at 1:00pm on the following dates: February 24-25 and March 2, 4, 7 and 9.
