Happy Holidays! A year in review & looking forward
WISHING EVERYONE HAPPY & SAFE HOLIDAYS!
We want to wish our vast community of artist members, board members, clients, donors, funders, staff and volunteers a Happy Holiday and all the best for the New Year. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us during this time and for the compassion and kindness you have shown. We wish everyone good health and hope that you enjoy this retrospective glance at an unforgettable 50th year.
Open Studio would not be the vibrant place that it is without all of you!
Please note that Open Studio will be closed for the holidays from December 20th, 2020 until January 3rd, 2021. Online shop orders will be filled after January 4th, 2021.
LOOKING BACK – CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF OPEN STUDIO IN 2020
We entered our 50th Anniversary with the archive exhibition PRESS RECORD featuring prints and ephemera spanning Open Studio’s 50-year history. It was a pivotal moment to get together to celebrate our history while planning for our future.
In spring, we were excited to host Quvianaqtuk Pudlat for the Inuit Artist Creative Residency in partnership with Kinngait West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative Studios (WBEC) and Dorset Fine Arts (DFA). While we had to cancel our residency with Glasgow-based Turner Prize finalist Ciara Phillips, we were fortunate to be able to recommend her and artist member Michelle Forsyth, for the Partners in Art online TBD Takeover in partnership with artist-run centres. We also held our first-ever online auction, FUTURE PROOF, which was a success thanks to our generous artist community and ever-expanding donor circle.
This year was truly marked by the generosity of our community and we are thankful for all your support!
We end the year with a celebration of Open Studio’s community via the group exhibition Murmuration, and are excited to announce that all of our current shows will remain on display in the galleries until Saturday, March 6, 2021. Forthcoming exhibitions are now extended to eight weeks through summer 2021, and then to six weeks starting in September 2021.

LOOKING FORWARD – CONNECTING OUTSIDE & WITHIN
As we enter 2021 we are excited to announce that there are some great programs and opportunities to unveil!
In 2020 we were aiming to take Open Studio beyond its walls and out into the public sphere, and we are thrilled to announce that our partnership with StreetARToronto is now a reality. The artists featured in this project include twelve from Open Studio’s current artist membership and four artists from WBEC Studios in Kinngait (Cape Dorset). We’re also happy to report that our collaboration with Lake Effect Projects is a go, and you can now view the DAY TRIPPER installation (the first of two presenting work by Nix Burox and Lorna Livey) at the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. The billboard project promotes a unique partnership between the arts and the city’s iconic yet fragile waterfront.
We welcome 2021 with renewed enthusiasm and as an opportunity to grow and learn together.
While Open Studio’s current call for programming submissions has been paused, we are taking the time to form an Advisory Committee that will examine our organization and its actions through an anti-racist, equity-seeking lens. We acknowledge that we have very few IBPoC members in our community. We need to address the inequities in our organization, hold ourselves accountable, and identify and dismantle racist structures that have been perpetuated. In 2021, we will inaugurate a scholarship for an IBPoC artist and examine more ways to welcome more diversity in our community.
