Artistic Programming

About our Artistic Programming

Open Studio is committed to providing an equitable platform for public programming that reflects innovative, cross-cultural approaches to contemporary printmaking. We prioritize applications from equity-deserving communities, including racialized persons (BIPOC), persons with disabilities, those living with mental illness, and individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Our programming aims to foster audience engagement with printmaking’s evolving role in contemporary culture, promoting diverse interpretations of the medium. This includes non-Eurocentric printmaking, digital and analogue forms, DIY practices (zines, posters, pamphlets), and other traditional print techniques.

Our gallery exhibitions and residency opportunities are open through annual calls for submissions, as well as invited and curated exhibitions. We encourage proposals that explore the industrial, digital, commercial, and craft-based aspects of print, as well as those that combine print with other media or address its conceptual aspects (such as sequencing, multiples, and layering). We welcome both solo and group exhibition proposals.

Curatorial Vision

We aim to create inclusive programming that supports innovative, non-hierarchical approaches to contemporary printmaking from diverse, cross-cultural perspectives. Our goal is to elevate print as a medium and shape audience understanding of its relevance in contemporary culture.

Exhibitions & Submissions

Open Studio hosts an annual call for exhibition submissions to the Main Gallery and Project Space, with additional special programming opportunities as they arise.

Exhibitions are selected through a juried call and curated projects, typically in the fall. The programming year runs from September to July, with submissions for the following year.

The Main Gallery is open to all print artists, while the Project Space is reserved for artist members. To become a member, contact us by email. Applications are available a month before the deadline—sign up for our newsletter for updates.

  • Eligibility: Applications must be print-based or related to printmaking. Artists who have shown solo or duo exhibitions (Main Gallery & Project Space) must wait one year before reapplying, though this does not apply to group exhibitions (three or more artists). These criteria do not apply to offsite or special exhibitions. Board and staff members are ineligible during their term, except in cases where an artist transitions into a staff/board role after being programmed.
  • Jurying: Submissions are selected by a jury that includes Open Studio staff and a rotating artist member or external arts community member. The jury cycle lasts one year. Due to the volume of submissions, we are unable to provide individual feedback.

Main Gallery

The Main Gallery is Open Studio’s largest exhibition space. Exhibitions are selected through an annual, juried, open call for submissions, in addition to curated projects. In the Main Gallery, we present both solo and group exhibitions that feature a wide range of print media-based works from traditional to experimental, including work that, although not necessarily produced using traditional printmaking techniques, shares through its conceptual concerns a relationship to printmaking.

Project Space

The Project Space is a juried exhibition space for which Open Studio artist members can apply to exhibit recent print work and related projects, both individual and collaborative. Exhibitions are selected through an annual, juried, open call for submissions, in addition to curated projects. The Project Space welcomes experimentation and encourages artists to use the space as a testing ground for what print can be.
