Residencies Information

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR RESIDENCIES

Open Studio offers an annual call for residencies open to the public (application calls are usually sent out annually in the spring). Many opportunities are available to artists with little to no print experience. All public calls are open to our artist members, except for the visiting artist residencies. Our residencies allow us to continue providing equitable access to our studio and services. Please review the links below for more details about each opportunity.

Open Studio is committed to providing an open and equitable platform for public programming that reflects innovative, non-hierarchical and cross-cultural approaches to contemporary printmaking by artists from diverse backgrounds and wide-reaching perspectives.

We are dedicated to engaging and supporting all individuals and prioritize applications from members of equity-deserving communities, including racialized persons: Black, Indigenous, People(s) of Colour (BIPOC); persons with disabilities, persons living with mental illness, and 2SLGBTQIA+ persons.

Applications will be made available a month before an announced deadline and we recommend signing up for our newsletter for further updates.

Residency submissions are selected by a jury consisting of:

  • Open Studio’s Curator & Collections Manager, and Studio & Education Manager [shortlist together, but only have 1 vote];
  • A member of the Open Studio’s Programming Committee;
  • An Open Studio artist member;
  • Two external jurors from the wider arts community.

Juries change each submission year. Where possible, the Programming jury will jury all residency and exhibition opportunities for a one-year cycle. Open Studio’s Programming Committee Chair coordinates the jury meetings.

Please note that due to the number of submissions that we receive, Open Studio is unable to provide individual feedback for applications.

The annual call for residencies is paused until spring 2025. Read our update, and join our newsletter.

We are excited to announce that our forthcoming public calls for programming are specifically directed to members of equity-deserving communities, including racialized persons: Black, Indigenous, People(s) of Colour (BIPOC); persons with disabilities, persons living with mental illness, and 2SLGBTQIA+ persons. Additionally, artists who apply do not need to have a printmaking background to be eligible.

In creating these intentional calls for participation, we hope to remove pre-existing barriers to participation and build more open and inclusive public programs and opportunities for artists to work in print. EDI discussion will form an active component of the jurying process. For more information about Open Studio’s ongoing EDI initiatives, click here.

Please note that most of our residencies take place from September to July, specifically year-long residencies, however, timing does alter for shorter-term residencies or project-based residencies and a schedule is determined once a recipient is selected.

We welcome local, national, and international applications, but we do not provide financial support for travel or accommodation. However, we are happy to provide a letter of support for funding applications to artists accepted into the program.
