Artist talk: July 8, 20173:00pm – 4:30pm

Open Studio Print Sales Gallery presents an artist talk by American printmaker, Jean Gumpper. Jean will discuss her print process, her career that spans almost four decades, and on her multi-layered woodcuts pulled from the drawers of the Print Sales Viewing Room.

I respond to landscape as a metaphor for emotions and experiences. I seek to integrate the memories and sounds of being in the landscape into the making of the print, to integrate the process with form and content. It is a way for me to relive an experience and to share it with others.

I am always looking for water. The sources of my prints are from springs in the Grand Canyon encountered after long, hot hikes, fall river walks, the end of a trail in the mountains that opens up into a pond reflecting the colours of a sunrise, small plants flowering in arid Death Valley and many other details discovered from both far away and from near my home.

To me, these images become rich in meaning as they suggest resilience, renewal, beauty and new life in a time of constant change. – Jean Gumpper
