What is lost in mindless scrolling?

To explore this question, Jules Dufresne recorded the timestamps of 15 minutes of Instagram scrolling, then took a 15-minute walk, photographing what they encountered at those same moments. Through screenprinting, these digital traces are layered over photographs of the physical world, bringing online consumption into direct contact with lived experience.

The work examines how constant connectivity reshapes attention, drawing focus away from the subtle details of everyday life and making moments of stillness increasingly difficult to inhabit. Installed as dozens of vertical scrolls, the prints unfold from top to bottom, echoing the endless motion of the screen.

The digital screen and the physical world overlap, creating a space where attention moves between two realities, much like the unconscious gesture of scrolling itself.

Jules Dufresne (they/them) is a transdisciplinary artist originally from the unceded territory of Nitaskinan, Québec, currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Art, Media, and Design at OCAD University. Working across analog photography, screenprinting, performance, and poetry, their practice explores self-construction in relation to new media and digital culture through an auto-ethnographic lens. They have presented their work at the RIPA -rencontre interuniversitaire de performance actuelle- (Montréal, QC), at Le Lieu, Centre en Art Actuel (Québec City, QC), and at Xpace Cultural Centre (Toronto, ON).
