For printmaker Christopher Hutsul, Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Pickering, Ontario. was an opportunity to explore his fascination with large, person-made structures and infrastructure, the likes of dams, mines, power plants etc. In this instance, he was interested in surveying the power plant’s physical and symbolic relationship with adjacent residential Pickering and Lake Ontario. Visually, he was excited about the elements’ contrasting textures, scale and geometry. The image isn’t meant to celebrate or critique nuclear fission as a source of power, but rather encourage us to think about where our electricity comes from and to marvel at the scale and complexity of the endeavour.

Christopher Hutsul is an artist and producer of commercials. He lives in Toronto with his wife and two daughters.
