Jenn Law is a Toronto-based artist and writer whose work explores the relationship between language and the natural world. In to your own devices, Law considers the possibilities of collaboration between artist and plant, examining the exchange between intervention and autonomy.

Law’s practice involves letterpress printing poetic sentiments into the leaves and petals of wild and cultivated plants, often as the first stage of a multi-print process. The act of printing creates a form of correspondence with botanical subjects, where each plant receives and responds to the intervention in a unique way. For this installation, ivy becomes both collaborator and subject. Known for its resilience and adaptability, the ivy is printed one leaf at a time, delicately coaxed through the press as it begins to alter the text.

Over the course of the installation, the ivy gradually edits the words out of itself, leaving behind the vacant outlines of letters and phrases. Through this process of addition and erasure, to your own devices becomes an exploration of connection, transformation, and letting go.
