Born into a traditional Chinese family in Taiwan, Carlina Chen came to Canada to study printmaking at OCAD University, and then decided to stay to pursue her art practice.
The dual cultural living experience has enabled her personal growth, enriched her life, and inspired her art practice. When she has qualms, she resigns to: I travel from an island to a continent; I rest in my own city.
The Thaw Came series is a response to Carlina Chen’s experience of living in Toronto – a city with four-seasons, which vary quite extremely, especially between winter and spring.
She enjoys walking on sidewalks or park paths at night in the winter season, hearing the crunching and squeaking sounds of her footsteps on the snow-covered surfaces. She also loves to watch the buds on the tree branches when strolling through parks in the springtime.
