In this Print Speak session: Source Code of the Digital, Alex Linfield discusses the progression of media, tracing through-lines from print media into digital media to better understand the current moment’s technology. This talk will look at examples of skeuomorphism, etymology, and other precedents which informed the execution and content of Linfield’s ongoing body of work W Y S I W Y G, as well as the media tools and artifacts of today. Using print media as a precedent to new/digital media, this talk will question whether new media actually means new problems.

Alex Linfield is a multidisciplinary artist and printmaker with a Master of Fine Arts from NSCAD University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta. Raised in Treaty 8 Territory (Grande Prairie, Alberta), Linfield worked in manufacturing and industry which sparked his interest in reproducibility, mass-produced objects, and industrial tools. During his MFA he was introduced to Thing Theory (a philosophy of objects) and Media Theory, which greatly influenced his recent body of work titled “W Y S I W Y G.” Linfield has exhibited nationally and internationally with recent exhibitions including the International Print Biennale Trois Rivieres, SNAP Gallery Edmonton, and Kent State University Ohio. Alex Linfield is currently based in Mohkinstsis, treaty 7 territory (Calgary, Alberta).
